National Foundation of Dentists for the Handicapped
The National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped (NFDH); a charitable affiliate of the American Dental Association; is committed, through collaboration, to arrange comprehensive dental treatment and long-term preventive services to needy disabled, elderly or medically compromised individuals through a national network of direct service programs that involve 15,000 volunteer dentists and 3,000 volunteer laboratories.
NFDH offers three direct-service programs:
1) Donated Dental Services (DDS):
The Donated Dental Services (DDS) program is a collaborative, direct way that the dental profession reaches out to individuals with special needs.
Because of the extraordinary compassion of over 15,000 dentists and 3,000 dental laboratories across the country, DDS tends to the essential and comprehensive dental care needs of our nation’s most vulnerable people; disabled, elderly or medically-compromised individuals who cannot afford necessary treatment nor get public aid. DDS patients have slipped through the cracks of Medicaid and Medicare programs with nowhere else to turn.
2) Bridge/Campaign of Concern:
Bridge is a dental outreach program that spans the gap for developmentally disabled individuals by bringing hygienists into schools, vocational centers and group homes. Bridge helps minimize the incidence and severity of dental diseases by offering preventive education services to people with poor oral hygiene. Information from screenings is used to prioritize referrals for treatment and guide staff in providing oral health instruction.
3) HouseCalls:
The Dental HouseCalls program was established to bring care to people who cannot easily travel to dentists’ offices: residents of nursing homes, homebound individuals and developmentally disabled people attending day programs or living in residential centers.
