Health & Home Care Society of BC

Health & Home Care Society of BC

The Health and Home Care Society of BC is an independent and BC-based not-for-profit organization. Since 1898, we have taken care of British Columbians through healthcare initiatives tailored to the communities we serve.

We continue this tradition of caring today with preventive and supportive health services that keep people healthy and in the comfort of their own homes, communities and workplaces.

Our charitable programs focus on supporting seniors, caregivers and other people at risk of isolation:

Meals on Wheels

Since 1967, our Meals on Wheels program has provided hot, nutritious meals and warm, friendly visits to people throughout Vancouver and Richmond. The program, which began with a handful of meals delivered in Kitsilano, now delivers more than 500 meals every weekday. Our program also includes one of Canada's first Chinese Meals on Wheels services, launched in 1996 to provide authentic Asian cuisine and Chinese-speaking volunteers for the region's changing population.

Family Respite Centre

Our Family Respite Centre is the first program of its kind in Canada. In 1979, we started an Adult Day Program for people with Alzheimer's disease, dementia and other mental and physical frailties. In 1994, we added an Overnight Respite Program to our services when we opened our Family Respite Centre, the only program of its kind for caregivers who urgently need a rest from their responsibilities.

Community Integration

The Community Integration Project provides support services and two specially outfitted apartments at St. George's Place in Vancouver to help people make the transition from rehabilitation to life in the community. The program was launched in 2000.

Health Promotion Services

In addition to our charitable services, our Registered Nurses have delivered Health Promotion Services since 1997 to workplaces, pharmacies and individuals in 120 communities throughout the province. We offer immunizations, health education, screening tests, occupational etc.
