Grand-Parenting Again Canada Brant
Grand-Parenting Again Canada Brant (also known as GPA Brant) is a Not-For-Profit support group for Grandparents and Extended Family Members raising related children (grandchildren, nieces/nephews, etc). Founded in St.Catherines in 2000, GPA Brant formed in 2002 to meet the needs of its Brant County members and services many families each year.
Grandparents of over 20,000 Ontario children find themselves in the role of primary caregivers. Individuals raising extended family members often do not receive much (if any) child support, and are rarely considered for provincial assistance, including reduced childcare or recreational / sports programs, or even Legal Aid. Grandparents fall through the cracks of most support systems, as there are few social resources set-aside for the care of these children. Unfortunately grandparents often have to provide for their grandkids well into retirement. Financial resources are often stretched to the limits, however their love for their grandchildren and preserving family ties are their primary goals.
GPA Brant understands the challenges that extended family raising related children face and offer relevant support and guidance. We are a peer-driven network who advocates for the rights and special needs of grandparents raising grandchildren on local and national levels and help members find information and community resources. GPA Brant holds monthly meetings in a child-friendly environment, hosts social events & participates in fundraising throughout the year.
