Family Caregiving 101

Family Caregiving 101

The National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) and the National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC) – leaders in the movement to better understand and assist family caregivers — have joined together to recognize, support and advise this vital group of Americans. Family caregivers have been part of America’s health care picture for a very long time. Yet, their roles and special needs are just being acknowledged.

More than 50 million family caregivers in this country provide care for a chronically ill or aging family member or friend. It is estimated that family caregivers provide some $306 million in services to America’s overburdened health care system.

Our outreach program is called "Family Caregiving: It’s not all up to you." This effort is national in scope, and includes radio announcements and magazine and newspaper advertisements that connect family caregivers to information and services that can help improve their lives and the level of care they can offer their loved ones. Research has shown that millions of Americans are taking on the burden of caregiving without acknowledging the effect it has on their lives, and without realizing there is relief out there for them.

The centerpiece of the Family Caregiving: It’s not all up to you campaign is familycaregiving101.org. The site is designed to provide caregivers with the basic tools, skills and information they need to protect their own physical and mental health while they provide high quality care for their loved one. It is also a place for family caregivers to return again and again as new levels of caregiving are reached. Advertising messages, crafted with the assistance of family caregivers themselves, assure caregivers across America that they are not alone, and encourage caregivers to take better care of themselves and their loved one by visiting the site and asking for help.
