Caregiver Handbook

Caregiver Handbook

The Caregiver Handbook is a comprehensive tool for use by caregivers of cognitively impaired persons. This Handbook contains over 90 different cognitive activities divided into six categories – Language and Music, Visual/Spatial Orientation, Memory, Critical Thinking, Computation and Physical Exercises. The demands on the caregiver of a person with cognitive impairment are great. At times, coming up with activities that promote interaction and mental stimulation can be taxing. The Fit Minds Caregiver Handbook is designed to give the caregiver a structured and easy to use toolset to help support the individual’s remaining cognitive capacity and his/her ability to communicate with other people. The activities in the Handbook provide a way of engaging with the person when the familiar ways of communicating and interacting have been impaired.

The activities in the Handbook can be selected and guided by caregivers according to their assessment of the interests and abilities of the person for whom they are caring. A plan can be set up using activities from several or all of the categories but should always include a physical component. The most important focus of the program is to address the specific needs of the individual and to facilitate communication and meaningful interactions through the activities provided. Enhancing cognitive abilities will improve quality of life and provide joy and confidence to both the caregiver and the person suffering from cognitive impairment.
