The History

In 1872, Rev. Isaac H. Tuttle was deeply concerned that many elderly people who had been vital and productive during their working years had fallen on difficult times and had no place to turn. He secured a vacant building and established the "Home For Old Men and Aged Couples."

In 1897, land on 112th Street and Amsterdam Avenue was purchased and a new building was completed. It had attractive rooms, parlors and an infirmary staffed with doctors and nurses — it even had an elevator!

101 years after the founding of the HOMAC, a new home known as Amsterdam House was built which could accommodate more than 300 residents. Along with the increased space came increased services we could offer our residents.

Our recent expansion and renovations have created a technologically advanced facility for 409 residents and a highly skilled staff. Yet we have retained a home-like setting which includes Old World style furnishings. Our programs have expanded to include an Adult Day Health Care Center, housed in a recently remodeled building adjoining the main facility.

Standards Like None Other

Highly qualified doctors, geriatric nurse practitioners, nurses, therapists, dieticians, therapeutic recreation specialists and social workers are focused on caring for the mind, body and spirit of each resident. Amsterdam Nursing Home has a history of outstanding inspection results from the New York State Department of Health in its annual survey.

A Continuum of Care
Amsterdam House, a not-for-profit corporation, is widely known and highly regarded for its comprehensive and individualized treatment. Quality care characterizes each service provided by our deeply committed staff. Whether helping new residents to comfortably adjust to nursing home life, administering medical treatments or performing clinical assessments, Amsterdam staff members are always mindful of residents' welfare. Staff members take pride in seeing our residents chatting, laughing and enjoying themselve
